Solar PV Inverter Buyer's Guide 2023

Oct 17, 2023

The 2023 Solar Inverter Buyer's Guide reflects a sea change in the market, as manufacturers debut models that meet the smart inverter standards of UL 1741 and the PV Hazard Control testing of UL 3741. Meanwhile, more and more microinverters are emerging that make their case via boosted power output, handling multiple modules and hardening reliability. From hybrids that connect PV solar with batteries to souped-up string inverters that decentralize utility-scale arrays, there's a lot to consider.

Before we get to what's new among the 15 manufacturers listed, here is some buying advice from the product pros.

Service and support matter | "The quality of an equipment manufacturer should be measured not only by the quality of their products but also the reliability of their service and support teams. Ensure that the modules, inverters, racking, and balance of system manufacturers you choose to work with have a history of supporting their projects in the field," says Anton Patton, product management and applications engineering director at CPS America.

Complete solutions | "This year, we see a tremendous focus on the importance of a complete solution for residential customers and with that, are putting emphasis on education, training and support that is needed to ensure a seamless experience for the end-user," says Nhan Pimentel, VP home segment, SMA America.

Off-grid, industrial-grade needs | "Solar electric systems are increasingly attractive for industrial users and their critical remote powering needs. They’ll be looking for the best OPEX in systems possible, and that requires components with long-term, ‘hands-off’ reliability. Consequently, there will be a greater emphasis on high-quality, more dependable products and systems, and less on price sensitivity. Future systems will prioritize more secure control and communications features, using a number of industry protocols, for more seamless integration (benefiting installers) and operation (benefiting end users). Pre-configured systems require less installation time up-front and generally enjoy lower maintenance costs. We expect this trend to continue," says William Mellema, director, product management with Morningstar.

Installing for the long-term | "Without extensive development and rigorous testing, these products can be prone to failure, costing solar installers time, money, and reputation. When installers make an investment in a PV system, they are investing in the quality of the manufacturer and their promise to stand behind their product. My advice would be to research and choose a reputable brand that has maintained a highly regarded name in the solar industry. When it comes to solar innovation, warranty, support and overall experience, installers should find a trusted company that is dedicated to providing not only quality products and technology, but also exceptional long-term service and solutions," says Bob Wszolek, Fronius USA content marketing specialist.

Planning for batteries | "With new California regulations, the time is now to take steps to secure battery supply and to consider its impact on your overall workflow. A higher volume of battery projects will translate to a longer typical install," says Josh Schlipp, Renogy X president.

"A growing trend we expect to become much more prominent this year is for homeowners to buy PV+storage in combination. In California, the introduction of the NEM 3.0 Net Billing Tariff on April 14, and the state's subsequent transition to a self-consumption market, will mean that adding storage to PV systems becomes essential for homeowners who want a faster return on their investment. For traditional PV installers, these trends present an opportunity to significantly improve their business profitability. They should seek to offer a range of storage solutions that meet all need states – self-consumption, partial backup and full backup. They should also consider the factors that make installing batteries easier and more profitable for their business. For example, a battery that is quicker to install and commission will allow them to complete projects much more quickly, greatly improving their productivity," Magnus Asbo, senior director – residential product management, SolarEdge Technologies.

Avoid delays | "Supply chains are tenuous in 2023 as the solar energy industry is on a steep growth path. Don't over-promise with your customers," says Terence Parker with Solis.

Opting for optimizers | "Optimizers are becoming an efficient and cost effective addition to rooftop solar systems. For many cases, they can help homeowners maximize energy production and reduce the cost of their electricity bill. Using optimizers also allow systems to easily meet Rapid Shut Down requirement while also enabling module-level monitoring," says Chauncey Sun, senior director of product management at TIGO Energy.

The Solis S5-GC family of PV Filling a neglected power size niche in the US solar market, Solis 75K - 100K inverters are also unique with the industry's widest full power MPPT operating range. With adjustable ac voltage connections from 310 V to 480 Vac, the Solis S5-GC(75-100)K-US family of inverters are the best repowering PV string inverters on the market today. Used as replacement for older central or PV string inverters, the modern Solis 1000 Vdc inverters deliver safety upgrades and better communication capabilities to "legacy" 600 Vdc PV arrays that may be sitting on valuable land, or may have favorable off-taking contacts or interconnection agreements. Solis S5-GC(75-100)K-US inverters can be located at the combiner box or at a central location. In either case, very wide full-power MPPT operating ranges (e.g., 90K, 309-850 Vdc) on as many as 10 independent MPPTs will extract maximum value from aging PV arrays.

The S5-GC(75-100K)-US family of inverters are UL 1741 SA & SB certified and comply with IEEE 1547-2018 and 2030.5. The S5-GC(75-100K)-US inverters are UL 3741 certified with Sollega and with Esdec Solar rooftop racking systems (Ecofasten, PanelClaw, Ironridge).

What's new? Tigo Energy enhanced its module-level power electronics with Pure Signal technology, which they say affords solar installers more margin for error when designing large, complex systems for commercial and industrial applications. In late 2022, Tigo Energy also acquired FSIGHT, an energy data analytics software company based in Hod HaSharon, Israel. With FSIGHT, Tigo expands its ability to use energy consumption and production data for solar energy producers.

Our Tigo EI Residential Hybrid Inverter can work as a standalone photovoltaic inverter today and when you’re ready for storage, easily add our EI Battery. When paired with Tigo's Optimizers, our patented PIV enables more output per given area and modules to be placed in areas with shade. PVRSS certified for Rapid shutdown with Tigo's TS4-A-O and TS4-A-F/-2F MLPE, right out of the box. With 50V startup, the inverter can wake up early and shutdown later. This means our system is able to maximize more energy production through the day. It is UL 1741 listed.
