Pevely UPS distribution center to open Sept. 26

The United Parcel Service distribution center under construction in Pevely is expected to open Sept. 26, providing about 110 permanent jobs, UPS officials said.

In addition, the package delivery company soon will hire dozens of people for seasonal work.

Delivery trucks departing from the 36,000-square-foot building at 8921 Weier Road will distribute packages to a wide area, said J.J. Jager, a UPS human resources specialist.

"We will be going south to about 15 minutes north of Farmington," said Jager of the Pevely center's coverage area. "We will go just south of Arnold to the north. Then, going to the west, we’ll go to Pacific."

To the east is the Mississippi River, he noted.

A smaller UPS facility at 20 Goodwin Drive in Crystal City will close when the Pevely building opens, he said, and the Pevely center will assist a couple other smaller UPS facilities in the region.

"The Farmington facility will remain open," Jager said. "The one in Union also will remain open. They are both out of their capacity."

He said UPS officials need more space due to increased business, so the decision was made to build the new facility in Pevely.

The warehouse consists largely of concrete floors and high ceilings.

"We need a new bigger facility to accommodate growth and to get ready for the holiday season," Jager said. "The reason we are going to this is population growth and e-commerce. Especially during COVID, people figured out how to order online."

Sergio Rocha, UPS engineer and the Pevely facility project manager, said the site serves his company's needs for the region.

"Pevely is a fantastic location that will enhance our nearby UPS network to deliver world class service to our customers in Missouri," he said.

Pevely Mayor Stephanie Haas said the city welcomes the UPS distribution facility.

"We’re very excited to see them up and running and have Pevely as its home," Haas said.

The Pevely facility will be the home base for dozens of delivery trucks, Jager said.

"We have room for 58 package trucks, half inside and half outside," he said. "For the holiday season, we can expand to accommodate more trucks through a temporary addition."

While customers conduct most business with the company from their homes or businesses, the facility will accommodate walk-up business.

"If you want to ship or pick up a package with UPS, you can do it here at the customer center," Jager said. "For instance, if it's a package you have to sign for and you missed delivery at your house, you can come here to sign for it and pick it up."

Hiring for permanent jobs at the facility is almost finished, Jager said, but he soon will gear up to hire people for the holiday season, which starts about mid-October and lasts until about mid-January, he said.

"We’re almost done hiring the permanent employees for this facility," Jager said. "For the holiday season, we will have around 100. UPS, nationwide, will hire about 100,000 for the holiday season."

UPS pays good salaries, he said.

"We have industry-leading wages," Jager said. "Our delivery drivers, on average, make $95,000 per year."

He said permanent jobs based at the facility include package delivery drivers and package handlers.

"Seasonal helpers meet with a driver en route and help the driver deliver packages," Jager said. "We’ll also have additional handlers in the facility (during the holiday season)."

He said seasonal workers often get a foot in the door for permanent positions with the company.

"Last year, we were able to promote 36,000 seasonal employees to permanent positions (companywide)," he said. "I, myself, started as a seasonal employee."
